Arab Weather - Typhoon Bavi, currently classified as one of the strongest tropical cyclones in the world, continues its movement over the waters of the western Pacific Ocean towards Taiwan, amid expectations that it will bring huge amounts of rain in a short period of time, which may exceed what the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan receives in a whole year.
The latest outputs of weather models indicate that the typhoon will affect Taiwan with heavy to very heavy rainfall, with expectations that the accumulated amounts in some mountainous areas will exceed 1000 to 1500 mm, and may increase locally due to the topography. These amounts exceed the annual rainfall average in Jordan, which is less than 500 mm in most areas of the Kingdom, and does not exceed 600 to 700 mm except in limited areas of the northwestern highlands.
The dangers of the hurricane are not limited to heavy rains, but it is expected to be accompanied by strong winds and towering sea waves, which increases the likelihood of flash floods and landslides, especially in mountainous areas and slopes.
The Arab Weather Center confirms that tropical cyclones are among the most extreme weather phenomena on Earth, as they derive their energy from the heat of warm ocean waters, and can release huge amounts of rain within hours, enough to exceed the annual rainfall rates in many countries of the world, which makes the risk of floods and landslides one of the most prominent threats associated with them.
